Ho Chung River Main

Ho Chung River is located at Sai Kung. It drains water from the area near Buffalo Hill and Tung Yeung Shan, and flows into Pak Sha Wan. Its drainage improvement works, which was completed in 2009, had incorporated many environmentally and ecologically friendly measures such as natural river bed, fish ladder, etc. The water quality is good according to the result of EPD river water quality monitoring programme.

Ho Chung River Main has a natural river bed with gabion and concrete embankments. Strips of rocks are scattered over the upper section of the watercourse to create micro-habitats to enhance biodiversity and zones of different water depths for aquatic lives.

 Woodland

Two small areas of secondary woodland are found at the southwest of Ho Chung and on the hill near the junction of Ho Chung Road and Hiram’s Highway. The overstorey of these woodlands comprises mainly common trees. The understorey of the woodland to the southwest of Ho Chung is largely vegetated by grass, herbs and a few common shrub and small trees. The understorey of another woodland is vegetated by seedlings and saplings of trees. Human disturbance by planting fruit trees is spotted at the woodland fringe.

 Grass Cover

The grassland area is mainly abandoned agricultural land. It is largely covered by grass, herbs and climbers. A few common crops are cultivated close to the village areas.

 Developed Area

Developed area includes Ho Chung Road, villages, footpaths and the abandoned building of Asia Television Limited. Vegetation found in this habitat is mainly ornamental plants, fruit trees, common self-sown trees, herb species and grass.
