Drainage Services Department

Murals have become a popular idea for city beautification in Hong Kong in recent years. In December 2019, Drainage Services Department was invited by nearby residents to collaborate in the mural project by the Finnish artist Riitta Kuisma. DSD supported the proposal and provided two external walls of Whampoa Garden Sewage Pumping Station for painting to improve the neighbourhood and integrate art into the community.

The artist spent about a month on the mural and completed in mid-July 2020. The nature-inspired mural has brought a refreshing change to the Whampoa area and the pumping station. While the walls are now covered with tropical trees and exotic flowers, the sky-blue background is also adorned with colourful macaws and an eye-catching peacock. The tree swing on the mural gives us a hint of relaxation and brings us into the nature. It creates a tranquil atmosphere for our minds to be transported from this buzzling city to the unspoilt countryside. The old blank concrete walls have been replaced by this vibrant tropical jungle which not only does beautify the environment, but it also makes the pumping station blend in with the community.
