Drainage Services Department

Winning thematic manhole covers installed

28 January 2026

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Drainage Services Department (DSD), we organised a thematic manhole cover design competition with the theme of featuring the characteristics of 18 districts in Hong Kong.  With due consideration on the design theme and site conditions, we carefully selected some of the designs from numerous outstanding entries to install them at various suitable locations progressively in 18 districts of Hong Kong.  These thematic manhole covers, comprising 7 winning designs and a total 70 nos. of covers, has now been installed successfully!

These thematic manhole covers either feature iconic facilities of their respective districts or showcase local history and culture.  Some of the designs are modern and elegant, while others are lively and cute.  They highlight the characteristics of each district, beautify the communities, and create new check-in spots for both citizens and tourists.

In addition to their outshining appearance, the DSD also put emphasis on the functionality of the thematic manhole covers.  For example, we incorporated keyholes and manhole cover marks in the designs, and ensured the anti-skid performance of the thematic manhole covers is retained while maintaining the aesthetic outlook of the design.

For other thematic manhole cover that are installed by the DSD, please visit the following DSD webpage for details:
