DSD Co-organizes Science in the Public Service 2018

Jointly organized by Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Government bureaux/departments and other organizations, the Science in the Public Service (SIPS) 2018 is taking place from July to December this year to promote their scientific work and application of technology to the provision of services for the general public.

Apart from the joint forum co-organised with HKO, Drainage Services Department (DSD) this year will also arrange laboratory workshops and guided tours to our facilities.

Details of the activities are as follows:

1. Forum
Date: 15 September 2018 (Saturday)
Time: 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon
Topic:        Application of SWIRLS Nowcasting System in Optimisation of the Control Philosophy of Shuen Wan Drainage System and Kai Tak River Improvement Works Forum   
Speakers: Mr WONG Ho Yeung, Jason, Senior Engineer, Drainage Services Department
  Mr TAM Ying Fan, Barry, Engineer, Drainage Services Department
  Mr WOO Wang Chun, Scientific Officer, Hong Kong Observatory
Remarks: The forum will be conducted in Cantonese. Attendance is free of charge and seating is on a first-come first-served basis


2. Drainage Services Department Sewage Treatment Laboratory Workshop

Date: 5, 12, 19 & 26 October 2018 (Friday)
  8, 15, 22 & 29 October 2018 (Monday)
Time: 9:30 am - 12:00nn or 2:30 pm - 5 pm
Venue: Shatin Sewage Treatment Works Central Laboratory
(Please arrange your own transportation)
Suitable for: Secondary 1 to 6 students (only accept school application)
No of participants: 20 students per session 
Introduction: This activity aims to introduce the science of sewage treatment and the work of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works to students through different interesting experiments

3. Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme (HVUSSS) Guided Tour
Date: 24 November 2018 (Saturday)
Time: 10 am – 11:45 am
Venue: Happy Valley
Suitable for: General Public (aged 12 or above)
No of participants: 40
Introduction: This guided tour starts with an introduction of the project details of HVUSSS and the associated innovative designs such as the smart movable weirs and water harvesting system. It is followed by site visit to the fan room, 60,000 m³ storage tank and green lawn on top of the pump house

4. Yuen Long Bypass Floodway Eco Tour

Date: 1 December 2018 (Saturday)
Time: 9:15 am – 12:00 nn
Venue: 9:15 am meeting at Science Museum
Suitable for: General Public (aged 8 or above)
No of participants: 28
Introduction: Participants can understand the environmental conservation features incorporated in DSD’s large-scaled flood prevention projects on site. The tour includes visiting to Santin Stormwater Pumping Station, Yuen Long Bypass Floodway Low Flow Pumping Station and Inflatable Dam, Engineered Wetland and Nam Sang Wai Kam Tin River Estuary
