Project Background

To cater for the future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is implementing enhancement works for the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS), which is located adjacent to Kwun Tong Bypass and Wai Yip Street.

Due to the proposed developments in the Kwun Tong area, there will be an estimated increase in sewage flow of 100,000m³. As a result, the Kwun Tong Preliminary Treatment Works (KTPTW) will be upgraded to treat the increased sewage. Moreover, it is expected that the existing Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) Stage 1 tunnel will no longer be able to cater the increase in sewage demand. In light of such circumstances, DSD is constructing an underground balancing facility with a storage capacity of 16,000m³ to temporarily store the excessive preliminary treated sewage from KTPTW during the peak flows. This project will serve to improve the robustness and resilience of the sewage conveyance system of the Kwun Tong District.

To fully utilize space, DSD will specifically develop the roof floor of the KTSPS into a fully landscaped green area, which will be opened to the public as a recreational ground.
