Enhancement Works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station
To cater for future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is carrying out enhancement works at the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS), which is situated near Kwun Tong Bypass and Wai Yip Street. The enhancement works commenced in late 2017 and are scheduled for completion in end 2022. This newsletter provides the latest information on the progress of construction and related information of the project.

A Greening Area in the Concrete Jungle
Our last newsletter introduced the operation of the deodorization system. We will now share DSD’s intentions towards the design of the landscaped deck. Apart from improving the efficiency of the deodorization system to create a more pleasant environment, DSD also put lots of efforts in the design of the recreational activities and its associated facilities to meet public’s aspiration.
DSD acknowledged the public’s desire for shelters and seating areas within the park throughout various channels. Therefore, we put in different types of shelters next to the play equipment / facilities and provide around 80 nos. of seating space for shading and resting purposes.
To improve the aesthetic appearance and the air quality of the Kwun Tong District, DSD aims to cover more than 30% of the landscaped deck with mixed types of tree species. By providing more greening area, park users can immerse and assimilate more into the natural environment. Our landscape architect selected 78 different plant species for planting with more than half of them are native species such as Cinnamomum camphora, Camellia crapnelliana, Liquidambar formosana etc. Most of them are colorful plants that change color seasonally. We hope that such planting scheme can attract birds and insects, as well as to raise public awareness on local conservation.
In addition, the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station enhancement project will collaborate closely with another DSD project – “Revitalization of Tsui Ping River” to help improving the ecological system of Kwun Tong, reducing the “heat island effect” and beautifying the community as a whole. To achieve connectivity, DSD also make reference to the planting scheme of nearby recreational facilities such as Laguna Park and Tsui Ping River Garden to ensure the newly created open space can blend into the surrounding seamlessly.
Participate in the 2021‘‘Life First’’ Campaign organised by the Construction Industry Council
The Drainage Services Department, the project team and the Contractor participated in the 2021 ‘‘Life First’’ campaign organized by the Construction Industry Council. A site walk was conducted on 18th May 2021 to review the site operation and risk management system, implement improvement measures and deliver key safety messages to all levels of workforce. Through this campaign, we aim to raise the safety awareness of all stakeholders and further minimize the safety risk in the industry.
