The Minister of Water Resources of the People's Republic of China, Mr Chen Lei and the Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Zhu Xiaodan visited the Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme

The Minister of Water Resources of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Chen Lei, the Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr Zhu Xiaodan and other officials, in the company of the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Hon Chi-keung, the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Enoch LAM Tin-sing and the Acting Director of Drainage Services, Mr MAK Ka-wai, visited the Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme (HVUSSS) on 28 May 2015.
 
During the visit, DSD introduced the flood prevention strategy, innovative elements and special design features of HVUSSS.  These included intelligent operation of  “Movable Weirs”, co-use of land for underground stormwater storage tank and football pitches atop,“Water Harvesting System” fully utilizing water resources and effective means of communication with stakeholders.
 
HVUSSS’ Phase 1 stormwater storage tank of 30,000 m3 was put into operation in March 2015, greatly alleviating the flooding risk of Wan Chai and Happy Valley areas.  The project is scheduled to be commissioned before the rainy season of 2018 and the areas’ flood protection level will be further uplifted by then.
