DSD International Conference 2014

DSD International Conference 2014 was held successfully on 12–14 November this year. With the theme of “Sustainable Stormwater and Wastewater Management”, the Conference attracted about 300 participants comprising overseas and local academia, professionals and representatives of the industries. The Conference was kicked off by a splendid dance performance which brought out the theme of the Conference. Director of Drainage Services, Mr Daniel CHUNG Kam-wah mentioned in his welcoming speech that, DSD accorded high priority to research & development (R&D) by actively collaborating with the academia and research institutions for the betterment of Hong Kong’s sustainable development. In the past 15 years, DSD has completed 136 R&D items and 44 items were in the pipeline. The keynote speakers for Day 1 of the Conference included Acting Secretary for Development, Mr Eric MA Siu-cheung, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr WAI Chi-sing, the leading authority in sewage treatment, Dr James BARNARD and Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Joseph LEE Hun-wei. On Day 2, the keynote speakers included Secretary for the Environment, Mr WONG Kam-sing, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Ms Anissa Wong Sean-yee, Professor Roger FALCONER from Cardiff University of United Kingdom and the well-known Chinese scholar, Professor QU Jin-hu. Before concluding Day 2, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - Institute for Hydraulic Engineering (UNESCO-IHE) and DSD signed the Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration in promoting knowledge and capacity development in sustainable stormwater management. In the morning of Day 3, the Conference was successfully concluded after the participants’ site visits to DSD’s facilities where they inspected DSD’s work in flood prevention and sewage treatment. |
