DSD Research & Development Forum 2018 concludes successfully

The Research & Development Forum 2018 by the Drainage Services Department (DSD) was held on 5 December 2018. The forum was divided into a morning session and an afternoon session under the themes " Smart City ∙ Innovative Stormwater Management " and “Smart City ∙ Innovative Wastewater Management” respectively. This year's forum was yet another success. Around 500 scholars, professionals and experts from the stormwater and wastewater industries attended the forum. The areas of discussion covered smart technologies, sustainable initiatives as well as novel innovations in the stormwater and wastewater fields.

In his welcome speech at the forum, the Director of Drainage Services, Ir Edwin TONG,  said that DSD has long been pursuing Smart City development in both  stormwater and wastewater management.  Smart City Blueprint has mapped out recommendations in which 3 of them are closely related to DSD’s ambit, namely: “Smart Living”, “Smart Environment” and “Smart Government”. 

The Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Ir LAM Sai-hung, delivered a keynote speech in the morning session, highlighting the Government’s determination to turn Hong Kong to a world class smart city.  In the afternoon, the Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Donald TONG Chi-keung, highlighted how innovation wastewater treatment can sustain and revive our environmental heritage.

In the morning session, Assistant Professor of Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Hong Kong Prof May CHUI; Professor and the Director of the Radio-frequency Radiation Research Laboratory of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Prof Ke Li WU; Professor / Associate Department Head of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Prof Yu Hsing WANG; Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Prof Stanley LAU; Scientific Officer of Hong Kong Observatory Mr. WC WOO; and Senior Engineer/Project Management 1, Drainage Services Department Ir Jason WONG shared their research findings and experience on smart technologies and sustainable drainage system.

In the afternoon session, Professor of Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Hong Kong Prof. Tong ZHANG; the Cheong Ying Chan Professor of Engineering and Environment of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Prof Tianshou ZHAO; the Chair Professor of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology   Ir Prof. Irene M. C. Lo, ; Research Fellow of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dr Amy G.Y. TAN and the Senior Chemist of Drainage Services Department Dr Frankie T.K. LAU shared their research findings and experience on innovative energy recovery and advanced sewage treatment technologies.

DSD's Research & Development Forum has flourished in the past thirteen years and is now one of DSD's renowned events. Aiming at creating better and sustainable living environment, the forum invites leading industry practitioners and noted experts to deliver speeches, providing a platform for stakeholders to exchange views and learn about the latest technologies as well as to explore opportunities for collaboration.
