DSD launches "Eco-channels Database Management System"

26 June 2014

To achieve the goal of sustainable development, Drainage Services Department (DSD) has constantly added new elements, in the aspects of design, construction and management, to its drainage improvement works so as to further enhance the river ecology conservation, biodiversity promotion and environmental protection.

Starting from 2013, DSD has established an "Eco-channels Database Management System" (EcoDMS) for the display and management of ecological data collected in green rivers.  Besides recording data of discovered species at different time in different rivers, this system also uses a global positioning system and a panoramic digital photography technology to mark the position of the existing river habitats, discovered species, status and their related information.  Through comparing cumulative records of river ecology, DSD can acquire more comprehensive information on the change of river ecology, including changes in the number of species and habitats.

The public can make use of this free online platform to enjoy the beautiful river habitat and to study different species.  DSD aims to use this system to facilitate planning of the river conservation works and to enrich public’s consciousness on the conservation of the river habitat.

The information of the following rivers is now available.  Please visit Eco-channels Database Management System (EcoDMS) for more details.

1) Ho Chung River, Sai Kung
2) Ngau Tam Mei Channel, Yuen Long
3) Tong Fuk River, Lantau Island
4) Yuen Long Bypass Floodway, Yuen Long
