Construction Safety Week 2014 – DSD’s 7 projects swept 12 awards in the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme

29 May 2014

Following the great success of the Construction Safety Week in 2013, the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council jointly organized the safety promotional campaign again from 26 to 29 May this year. Themed as “Workers’ Health and Safety Leadership”, the Construction Safety Week 2014 began with the Zero Accident Flag Presentation Ceremony which kicked off a whole range of marvelous activities.

At the Zero Accident Flag Presentation Ceremony held on the morning of 26 May at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the Chief Executive, Mr LEUNG Chun-ying, together with the Secretary for Development, Mr CHAN Mo-po and representatives from the construction industry, led 833 construction practitioners and set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘largest qigong lesson’ to promote a healthy lifestyle and the goal of zero accident in the industry. There was also a flag presentation ceremony, at which all participants pledged to strive for zero accident at construction sites. Apart from participants at Kai Tak, many workers joined the qigong lesson simultaneously at their own construction sites throughout the territory, of which over 1 000 workers at around 50 construction sites were from DSD.

Conference meetings and site visits were arranged on 27 and 28 May. The conference, comprising morning and afternoon sessions, included experience-sharing on construction safety with illustrations on its importance, and interluded with short drama episodes and dances to highlight the theme. The campaign organizer selected nine construction sites with outstanding site safety management and safety practices for site visits. The construction site of our project “Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme”(Contract No. DC/2012/03) was one of the selected sites. The Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony, held on 29 May, marked the finale of the Construction Safety Week 2014. This year, our construction sites swept a total of twelve awards - one Gold, two Silver, one Bronze and eight Merit awards. The list of winning sites is as follows:
