"DSD Adventures" Visited Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme

28 February 2026

On 28 February 2026, the DSD Volunteer Team (DSDVT) organised a "DSD Adventures" activity, leading participants from the Construction Industry Council, Hong Kong Federation of New Territories Youth, and SKH Tin Shui Wai Ling Oi Primary School to visit the Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme (HVUSSS).  Guided by DSD colleagues, participants learned about the design and operation of the scheme and entered the underground storage tank to observe key facilities, including the movable weir and reclaimed water system, at close range. They also used augmented reality technology to experience how the facility operates during extreme rainstorms, gaining a vivid understanding of its flood prevention role.

The DSDVT also ran a design thinking workshop, encouraging students to explore community needs and imagine different possibilities for the public co-use space above the storage tank. Through this exercise, students gained a better understanding of the planning concept of "Single Site, Multiple Use".

The "DSD Adventures" series, led by the DSDVT, aims to enhance young people's understanding of Hong Kong's wastewater and stormwater drainage services. Since its launch in September 2025, the series has covered facilities including Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel, Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works, Tsui Ping River, Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme and Yuen Long Bypass Floodway, and has received very positive feedbacks from both teachers and students. Each visit featured interactive elements such as orienteering tasks or science experiments to make learning fun and engaging, and provided opportunities for students to talk directly with DSD engineers, inspiring their interest in engineering and fostering awareness of sustainable development.
