DSD Exchanges Flood Management Insights with Climate Scientists and Industry Leaders

8 August 2025

The Director of Drainage Services, Mr Ringo MOK Wing-cheong, attended the 9th Convection Permitting Climate Modeling (CPCM) Public Forum – Rising the Challenge: Heavy Rainfall & Urban Resilience on 8 August. The Forum brought together the Government representatives, experts of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, international climate scientists (including experts actively participated in UN World Meteorological Organization's World Climate Research Programme and Lead Author of the 6th Assessment Report Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), leaders from fields of property management and insurance to deepen understanding of extreme precipitation events in urban coastal regions, explore adaptation strategies and share effective practices for addressing one of the most pressing climate challenges facing coastal cities today.

Mr MOK introduced DSD's Integrated Flood Management Strategy, comprising Adaptation, Resilience, and Management, to address challenges brought by climate change. Emphasizing Hong Kong's commitment to innovation, he highlighted the deployment of powerful pumping robots to enhance the emergency response under extreme rainfall events. Looking forward, he outlined DSD's collaboration with local and mainland universities to enhance the flood resilience using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), advancing flood prediction capability to a higher level.

The Forum underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in tackling climate change. DSD remains dedicated to safeguard Hong Kong's flood resilience in a changing climate.
