DSD's delegation attends Singapore International Water Week Spotlight 2025
30 June 2025
The Director of Drainage Services, Mr Ringo MOK Wing-cheong, led a delegation to attend the Singapore International Water Week Spotlight 2025 (SIWW) from 23 to 25 June.
SIWW is a summit and exhibition event on water resources organised by the Public Utilities Board (PUB), the Singapore's National Water Agency. The event, themed "Flood Resilient Cites: Adapting to Climate Change" this year, attracted more than 250 global public utility leaders, and exhibitors from over 50 countries and regions. Together, they explored how cities can strengthen their capabilities in tackling floods and extreme weather brought about by climate change, shared case studies, and fostered collaborative partnerships.
The delegation participated in the flagship programmes of SIWW, including the Cities Roundtable, High-Level Panels, In-Focus Forum and related Solution Marketplace. At the Cities Roundtable and High-Level Panels, Mr Mok introduced Hong Kong's flood prevention system which has been established over the past three decades. He also outlined the four strategies for coping with extreme weather: advance preparation, strengthened warning, resolute response, and speedy recovery. He emphasised that Hong Kong will continue leveraging innovative technology to enhance its flood resilience. Through a progressive adaptive approach, the city will implement the comprehensive 'Adaption, Resilience, Management' strategy to address the development and challenges of climate change.
At the In-Focus Forum, the delegation showcased how the DSD is adopting innovative approach by integrating smart flood barriers and high-capacity drainage facilities to address the challenges of climate change. They also presented the transformation of concrete drainage channels into pleasant blue-green river corridor, creating aesthetically enhanced public open spaces.
In addition, the delegation exchanged views with the representatives from the PUB on the common challenges, including the formulation of flood management strategies against sea level rise and extreme rainfall brought by climate change, enhanced strategies to cope with extreme weather, and planning flood protection and coastal protection measures for large-scale development projects.
Though its participation in the SIWW, the DSD engaged in in-depth exchanges with global water agencies on overcoming the challenges in flood management, showcasing Hong Kong's achievements in building a Flood Resilient City over the years.
