Drainage Services Department received four awards in the CIWEM HK 2024 Innovation and Sustainability Awards

6 December 2024

The CIWEM HK 2024 Innovation and Sustainability Awards, organized by The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management Hong Kong (CIWEM HK), aim to promote and recognize exceptional contributions in driving innovation and sustainability. These awards encourage the water and environmental management sector in Hong Kong to develop and adopt innovative and sustainable solutions, while also providing a platform for professionals to share their experiences and achievements.

Mr. Ringo MOK Wing-cheong, the Director of Drainage Services attended the CIWEM HK Annual Dinner cum the CIWEM HK 2024 Innovation and Sustainability Awards Presentation Ceremony on 6 December 2024, along with various project teams, with multiple awards received by four DSD projects.

Enhancement Works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station Project received the Platinum Award under the Innovation Category

In order to cope with the increase in sewage flow due to the future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department has been striving to innovate and implemented enhancement works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS) by constructing Hong Kong's first underground balancing tank with a storage capacity of 16,000m³ to temporarily store the excessive preliminary treated sewage from Kwun Tong Preliminary Treatment Works (KTPTW) during the peak hours. This project not only improved the resilience of KTSPS and KTPTW, but also reduced the use of a large amount of land resources for the construction of a new Preliminary Treatment Works.

In order to resolve the "Not-In-My-Backyard" effect, the project team also developed the roof floor of KTSPS into a landscaped deck (the Deck), providing about 11,000m2 of open space and open to the public. The Deck has adopted a design concept of  "playful nature". It meets different needs through the innovative design, provides residents with a convenient and comfortable living environment, and implements the initiative of "single site, multiple use".

Expansion of Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works, Phase 1 Project received the Merit Award under the Innovation Category

To cope with the anticipated increase in sewage volume of Sha Tau Kok area, DSD redeveloped the Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works (STKSTW) in situ. As the first pilot project of "Construction 2.0" in DSD, the project team incorporated various innovative elements such as adoption of "Design for Manufacture and Assembly" (DfMA) to construct the STKSTW in order to improve construction efficiency and site safety.

Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant Project received the Platinum Award under the Sustainability Category

The Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant is one of the iconic projects of DSD. It upgrades the existing Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works into the more sustainable Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant. The sewage treatment level is upgraded to tertiary treatment level with increased treatment capacity, while minimizing the energy consumption and maximizing the use of renewable energy, striving towards energy and carbon neutrality.

Yuen Long Barrage and Nullah Improvement Schemes Project received the Merit Award under the Sustainability Category

The Department summarized its flood control experience in Yuen Long District and used innovative thinking to combine stormwater pumps and flood barriers to design an innovative flood protection method. The project includes the construction of a flood barrier of about 60 meters long downstream of the Yuen Long Nullah near Shan Pui River, with a stormwater pumping station and a master control center, which can alleviate the flooding risk in the Yuen Long town areas and promote the ecological connectivity across the Yuen Long Nullah and Shan Pui River.

To conclude, the four awards presented by the CIWEM HK had recognized DSD's continuous effort in implementing innovation and sustainable solutions over the years.
