DSD Wins ICCBEI Best Paper Award, Marking Third AI Research Award in Four Months

10 January 2025

A research paper entitled "A Domain Knowledge-Enhanced Large Vision-Language Model for Construction Site Safety Monitoring," co-authored by the Drainage Services Department (DSD) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Civil and Building Engineering Informatics (ICCBEI) 2025. This achievement marks DSD's third Best Paper Award in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at competitive international forums within just four months.

The ICCBEI award-winning paper presents a pioneering approach to enhancing construction safety. By integrating domain-specific expertise with an advanced vision-language model, the Generative AI-powered system effectively analyses what cameras see against what rules state, identifying unsafe acts that conventional AI monitoring systems could not. This innovative technology has gained international recognition, earning a gold medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2024.

The trio of award-winning papers encompasses three themes: safety, operations and maintenance. Each paper focuses on one of these themes, together showing the breadth, depth and versatility of DSD's AI research endeavours. These accomplishments reflect DSD's commitment to cultivating an innovative research environment, wherein engineers are inspired to think creatively, research is driven by practical needs, and real-world solutions are developed to tackle complex challenges.

A trio of accolades in four months: the ICCBEI Best Paper Award (second right) and the Gold Medal with Certificate at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (second left), alongside certificates for two other Best Paper Awards.
