Drainage Services Department organised “International Conference on Integrated Flood Management Strategy”

4 December 2024

To address the challenges posed by extreme weather due to global climate change, the Drainage Services Department (DSD), in collaboration with the Civil Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), organised the International Conference on Integrated Flood Management Strategy on 3 December, 2024. The conference themed "Building an Adaptive and Resilient City to Safeguard the Public against Flooding under Extreme Weather", aims to foster international cooperation and experience sharing in flood management.

The conference brought together over 400 leaders of flood control agencies, policymakers, hydraulic experts and academic representatives from Hungary, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Mainland, Macao and Hong Kong. They discussed important issues including "Climate Change Challenge in the New Era – Integrated Flood Management Strategy", "Adaptation Approach against Increasing Flood Risk", and "Building a Smart and Flood Resilient City – Preparedness, Response and Recovery". Various experts shared their insights on hydrology, water resources, and flood management, allowing participants to broaden their perspectives and exchange experiences. In parallel with the conference, there were various exhibition booths, providing attendees with opportunities to explore current and the future development of flood management strategies.

Another key highlight of the conference was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the DSD and the Pearl River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources.  This will further strengthen the collaboration between both parties, making the conference not only a platform for international exchange but also enhancing cooperation in flood management, climate change responses, and innovative technologies.
