DSD Open Day 2024 – A Celebration of DSD's Innovation and Community Engagement

17 November 2024

DSD Open Day 2024, a 2-day event at Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works successfully concluded on 17 November 2024, attracting a record high attendance of 20,000 visitors.

This year marked the 35th anniversary of the Drainage Services Department (DSD). Through engaging in a diversified range of interactive activities, our Open Day, themed "Drainage Services by Technologies", enabled visitors to gain deeper insights into our profession and the innovative technologies we employ to enhance Hong Kong's flood prevention and sewage treatment efficiencies.

During the opening ceremony, Miss Janice TSE Siu-wa, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment), highlighted the significant contributions of our "Harbour Area Treatment Scheme", which had enabled the Cross Harbour Race to resume its traditional route in the central area of the harbour since 2017- some three decades after the suspension of the race due to poor water quality. Next year's National Games will also feature events held in Victoria Harbour, showcasing renewed confidence in its water quality.

In his address, the Director of Drainage Services, Mr. Ringo MOK Wing-cheong reaffirmed his commitment to innovation and technology, emphasising the importance of technological applications in drainage services. He also underscored the need to elevate expertise in response to increasing challenges and to promote sustainable development in sewage treatment and stormwater management.

The Open Day was filled with joy and excitement as visitors enjoyed a variety of fun and educational activities, including guided tours of the sewage treatment works, arts and crafts workshops, a DSD project discovery zone, interactive game stalls, photo spots, an art gallery flanked by award winning thematic manhole covers. The parades featuring signature mascots of various government departments added to the event's festive atmosphere, culminating in a lively celebration.

Indeed, DSD's Open Day 2024 has successfully transformed the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works into a weekend theme park, centered around the theme, "Drainage Services by Technologies".  It was a truly memorable event, fostering community engagement and showcasing DSD's commitment to a sustainable future.
