Sewage surveillance programme wins IWA Project Innovation Awards

With joint efforts of the Drainage Services Department, the Environmental Protection Department and the Department of Health, “The Territory-wide Sewage Surveillance Programme” was awarded with the Gold Award of the “2024 International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Awards” under the category of “Performance Improvement and Operational Solutions”.
The Awards presentation was held at the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition in Toronto, Canada on 13 August (Toronto time). An interdepartmental delegation comprising the Deputy Director of Drainage Services, Mr Robin LEE Hong-nin, the Director of Environmental Protection, Dr Samuel Chui and Principal Medical & Health Officer, Dr Kung Kin-hang joined the event to receive the prestigious prize.
Awarded by IWA biennially, the Project Innovation Awards aim to recognise projects and teams that demonstrate innovation and leadership excellence in research and technology within the professional water sector. Indeed, this Gold Award represents an accolade of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s innovative spirit and outstanding technological achievements in using sewage surveillance to help combat the COVID-19 epidemic. In parallel, this Gold Award is also an acknowledgement of the sewage surveillance team’s originality and seamless collaboration of its members’ expertise in its accomplishment of this trailblazing task.
