DSD's delegation attends Singapore International Water Week 2024
21 June 2024
Mr. Edwin LAU Shing-cheong, Assistant Director/Operations and Maintenance, led a DSD's delegation to attend the Singapore International Water Week 2024 (SIWW2024) from 18 to 21 June.
Jointly organised by Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and Public Utilities Board (PUB), the Singapore's National Water Agency, SIWW is a biennial summit and exhibition on the aspects including flood protection, water supplies and sewage services. In this year, the event was themed on the topics including climate mitigation, water sustainability, net zero and decarbonisation, resource circularity, digitalisation, and a new pillar on climate adaptation. The event saw more than 500 water and city leaders, more than 2,200 delegates and over 400 exhibiting companies from 30 countries and regions coming together to share knowledge and best practices, and foster new partnerships to tackle urban water and associated climate challenges.
DSD's delegation attended flagship programmes of SIWW2024 including Coastal and Flood Resilience Cities Roundtable, Utilities CEO Roundtable, Emerging Utilities Leader Summit, Water Convention and Water Expo. The delegation also participated in discussions and plenaries on key and emerging topics with global leaders, and learned the advanced technologies and solutions in wastewater treatment and stormwater drainage with global and cutting-edge equipment. Besides, the delegation shared DSD's experience including enhanced strategies to cope with extreme weather, and commitments on improving the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment in enabling the sustainable development of Hong Kong.
During the duty visit to Singapore, the delegation also joined with delegation from the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) to share with the PUB and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore on topics with common interest, including formulation of flood management strategies against sea level rise and extreme rainfall brought by climate change, enhanced strategies to cope with extreme weather, and planning for large-scale development projects with major functions of flood and coastal hazard protection.
This duty visit connected DSD with global water agencies to exchange knowledge on overcoming the common challenges in flood management and wastewater treatment. It also contributes to DSD's on-going study for the strategic planning on flood management against sea level rise and extreme rainfall. The visit also reinforced exchange in flood control and drainage management between DSD and PUB, laying a foundation for continuous cooperation of both parties in future.
