The Martin Barnes Awards, previously known as the NEC Awards, is an annual recognition given by the NEC Users’ Group under the Institution of Civil Engineers of the United Kingdom, to projects and organisations around the world that have showcased excellence in project delivery through collaborative partnering. This year, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) received the Winner Award under the Recognising Project Excellence and Innovation category of the Martin Barnes Awards 2024 for its "Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant" project, in recognition of its innovation in utilising technologies and advanced sewage treatment system to enhance energy efficiency, as well as the management techniques and collaborative efforts in achieving smooth project delivery.

Mr Ringo MOK Wing-cheong, the Director of Drainage Services, led the project team of Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant, attended the New Engineering Contract (NEC) Annual Conference 2024 and Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Martin Barnes Awards 2024 in London, the United Kingdom on 21 June 2024, and proudly received the Winner Award. The award is a recognition of the project team’s collaborative effort in pursuing project excellence and innovation, and the team’s partnering spirit to deliver transformative solutions.

Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant (YLEPP) is one of the iconic projects of DSD, transforming the existing Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works into the more sustainable YLEPP at tertiary treatment level with increased treatment capacity, while minimizing the energy consumption and maximizing the use of renewable energy, striving towards energy and carbon neutrality. The project team also fully exhibited partnering spirit, and successfully completed extensive and complicated temporary diversion of process pipework and temporary facilities, optimising the construction sequence to ensure smooth project delivery while ensuring uninterrupted operation of the sewage treatment plant.
