100% hit for DSD at International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2024

21 April 2024

DSD made an impressive mark at this year’s International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, with all its six entries winning awards, including two coveted Gold, two Silver and two Bronze Medals.

Renowned as one of the world’s largest exhibitions exclusively dedicated to inventions, this year’s event once again drew participants from 40 countries/regions. Over 1,000 inventions were evaluated by an esteemed international panel of experts.

This year’s success has demonstrated DSD’s unwavering dedication to the application of cutting-edge technology and its commitment to continually pushing boundaries and embracing innovation.

The list of awards for the six recognised inventions of DSD is:

Two Gold Medals

  • Virtual Construction Safety Assistant
Virtual Construction Safety Assistant uses Vision Language Model embedded with safety knowledge obtained from construction safety regulations, documents and site images to monitor site safety. The Assistant’s natural language processing capability enables it to be rapidly trained and allows it to be speedily adapted to fast-evolving safety regulations and guidelines, eliminating cumbersome and costly re-training. It can identify unsafe hazards and behaviours not recognisable by existing AI systems.

  • Tumbler Inspection Ball (TlB) Robot with Embodied Intelligence for Smart City
Tumbler Inspection Ball, which integrates modern robotics and AI technologies, is a breakthrough in the inspection of underground pipes and tunnels under confined space conditions. It is capable of providing stable and clear 360-degree panoramic videos for condition surveys. Shaped like a roly-poly, the Tumbler Inspection Ball stays upright as it sails down pipes and tunnels even under rapid flow conditions. Its internal camera stabilising system and AI enhance video quality.

Two Silver Medals

  • Generative AI Object Oriented Debris (GOOD) Grab
GOOD Grab uses generative AI in its operation to efficiently and safely rake up debris in the Kong Yiu Channel, taking into account factors such as debris accumulation and the presence of people and animals trespassing the Grab operating zone.

  • River Ranger - Wireless Battery-powered Remote-controlled Desilting Robot for River Channels
By leveraging modern robotics and wireless remote control technologies, River Ranger is able to freely move within channels, making it particularly suitable for long-distance desilting work in open channels and rivers. This robot is equipped with a front bucket and a bulldozer device, allowing it to easily scoop up or push away silt and debris. Taking advantage of its high mobility, this robot is specifically well-suited for urgent desilting work after heavy rains.

Two Bronze Medals

  • Blockage and Inflow Sewage Surveillance System (BLISS)
BLISS, utilising computer vision, will alert operators to imminent blockages in manual-cleaning basket screens installed in underground pump chambers. This allows “just in time” and “just in case” emptying of screens, reducing operation costs and the risk of sewage overflows caused by sudden screen blockages.

  • Intelligent Non-invasive Structural Health Inspection System for Multi-part Covers
Multi-part covers are used for covering accesses to large manholes and desilting openings of drainage facilities. This non-intrusive structural health inspection system counts on AI-based analytic techniques for defects identification of multi-part covers. Without the need of any road closure and uncovering works, this system is capable of identifying a problematic multi-part cover based on acoustic emissions arising from live traffic traversing over the cover. It significantly improves inspection efficiency while reducing traffic impacts rendered by road closures.
