RTHK Mandarin Channel Radio Programme Interviewed DSD on the History and Trivia of Manhole Covers

On 4 May 2023, DSD Hotline Superintendent, Mr Sammy LAI Chiu-leung, shared the history and trivia of manhole covers in a mandarin channel radio programme of the Radio and Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

In the programme, Mr LAI explained that manhole covers in Hong Kong have had over 100 years of history. There are approximately 160,000 public manhole covers in Hong Kong, covering a total length of over 4,700 kilometers of drainage systems. Mr LAI added that the patterns, English letters, and numbers found on the manhole covers all have specific meanings, allowing DSD staff to identify the channel system, DSD contract, and load-bearing capacity.
