Media interviewed DSD on Achievement of Energy Neutrality in Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant

8 November 2022

DSD Engineer, Ms Victoria CHAN Wan-yan, was interviewed by Hong Kong Commercial Daily, HK01, Ming Pao and Oriental Daily on 8 November 2022, to introduce how Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant (YLEPP) achieve energy neutrality through minimising the energy consumption and maximising the production of renewable energy.

Ms CHAN introduced to the reporters that YLEPP will be the first wastewater treatment plant in Hong Kong adopting the advanced aerobic granular sludge technology in biological treatment which requires smaller footprint and of high efficiency with lower energy demand. In addition, DSD has optimised the hydraulic design of the plant to lower the electricity consumption of inlet pumping station. Ms CHAN also introduced the numerous renewable energy installations in YLEPP, which include extensive provision of PV panels on building roof, and increasing the yield of biogas generated from the anaerobic digestion of sludge from YLEPP and other sewage treatment works, turning electrical energy to meet the annual power consumption of YLEPP, achieving energy neutrality.
