"Drainage Services Department Research and Development Forum 2022" successfully concluded

"Drainage Services Department Research and Development Forum 2022" was held on 18 October 2022 at the Hong Kong Science Museum. Themes of morning and afternoon sessions of the Forum were "Driving a New Era of Stormwater Management – "Rivers in the City" and “New Insights into Wastewater Management" respectively. The forum was a major event this year and was one of celebration events of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. About 1,600 participants, including government representatives, academia and industry and other stakeholders, attended the physical forum and webinar. We came together to exchange ideas and formulate new research strategies for Hong Kong's flood control strategies and sewage services.
Director of Drainage Services, Ms Alice PANG, in the welcome speech hoped that through organization of this Forum, government departments, academia and the industry together pushed forward research and development for flood control and sewage treatment. Efforts would be made to stimulate creativity so as to improve services of the Drainage Services Department.
The Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Mr Ricky LAU in the keynote address at the morning session pointed out that innovation was our key to future development and the Government took forward a new initiative of "Rivers in the City" in the community in order to create a liveable environment and provide amenity areas for public enjoyment. The Permanent Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Environment), Miss Janice TSE, in a keynote address at the afternoon session emphasized in strengthening innovative technology, interdisciplinary cooperation, and exploring the potential good use of resources in sewage.
In the morning session, Prof YEUNG King-lun of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof WANG Yu-hsing of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof Onyx WAI of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr Billy HAU of the University of Hong Kong, and Dr Angie NG of the Conservancy Association shared the technology and scientific research for applying in development of the "Rivers in the City".
In the afternoon session, Prof ZHANG Tong of the University of Hong Kong, Prof Chen Guanghao of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof Darwin LAU of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr Edwin TSO of the City University of Hong Kong, and Dr Amy TAN of the City University of Hong Kong shared experience and achievements of intelligent and sustainable development in sewage treatment.
The DSD will continue to exchange with various stakeholders, research and develop various smart technologies, and test and apply advanced technologies to promote the sustainable development of Hong Kong.
