DSD Research and Development Forum 2022 cum Student Workshops

23 September 2022

The "Research and Development Forum" is DSD's annual event and will be held on 18 October this year. The Forum is one of the celebration events for the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Taking this opportunity, the Forum will be held in the Hong Kong Science Museum with online attendance opened to the public. E-Certificate of Attendance will be sent to participants joining the Forum. Interested parties can enroll through the Forum website:  https://dsdrdforum2022.hk/en/registration.php

This year, we organised two student workshops for secondary school related to the themes of the Forum. Through the student workshops, the younger generation could know more about the DSD's research and development (R&D) work and the application of the latest technology in drainage services. We inspired the students to participate in the engineering and R&D discipline with a view to strengthening the work force to build a better Hong Kong in future.

On 18 July, we held a student workshop with Prof. Yeung King-lun of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and his research team at Heep Yunn School under the theme "River in the City - Kai Tak River (the First Urban Green River Corridor)". Prof. Yeung's research team introduced the odour control hydrogel which won silver medal at “International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva”, and demonstrated how the hydrogel diminished odour-producing microorganisms to inhibit odour through hands-on experiments. In addition, engineers from the DSD delivered a talk on “River in the City”. The students could understand that through river revitalisation, the city's connectivity could be enhanced with more quality public space. Moreover, people could enjoy the river facilities and experience the multi-functional water body.

On 12 August, we held a student workshop with the research team of Prof. Zhang Tong of the University of Hong Kong. During the workshop at the University of Hong Kong, Prof. Zhang's research team and we explained the theory of detecting 2019-nCoV from sewage and sewage sampling activity. Moreover, the research team demonstrated some R&D projects in collaboration with the DSD, including the in-manhole sampling robot for sewage surveillance that won gold medal at “International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva” in early 2022. We hope the sharing would arouse students'  interest in scientific and technological research.

Besides, the DSD will organise another student workshop with Lok Sin Tong Wong Chung Ming Secondary School concerning "River in the City" and Kai Tak River on 12 October.
