DSD Electrical & Mechanical Engineer Ms LEUNG Yuen-ting and Assistant Electrical & Mechanical Engineer Mr LEUNG Tsz-chiu Received "The HKIE Innovation Awards (Young Member Group) 2022"

11 June 2022

DSD Electrical & Mechanical Engineer, Ms LEUNG Yuen-ting, and Assistant Electrical & Mechanical Engineer, Mr LEUNG Tsz-chiu, were awarded "The HKIE Innovation Awards (Young Member Group) 2022" at the HKIE Prize Presentation Ceremony cum New Members' Reception on 11 June 2022, in recognition of their pioneering ideas and applications that would benefit the engineering industry and society. The brief description of the awards are as follows:

Grand Prize Category II (An Innovative Application of Engineering Theories)

Awardee:  Ms Stephanie LEUNG Yuen-ting

Awarded Project: "The Mini Bull"- Remotely Operated Underwater Wet Wells Cleaning Vehicle

Conventionally, wet well cleaning is carried out by certified workers in confined spaces. These conditions make the cleaning works extremely dangerous and inefficient. In view of the drawbacks of existing practice, Ms LEUNG developed a remotely operated underwater wet wells cleaning vehicle named the 'Mini Bull'. Overcoming challenges in the corrosive and almost invisible sewage environment, it can replace certified workers to perform confined space cleaning works in wet wells. This invention not only enhances operational efficiency and saves maintenance costs, but also considerably improves the occupational safety and health of underwater works.

Certificate of Merit Category I (An Invention)

Awardee: Mr Winson LEUNG Tsz-chiu

Awarded Project: Foam Removal Robot

Biological foaming occurs in a wastewater treatment plant from time to time. To assist the operation staff of sewage treatment plants to effectively remove the foam in their bioreactors, Mr. LEUNG and his team developed an innovative Foam Removal Robot, the first of its kind in the wastewater treatment industry. To further facilitate and promote the development of innovations and technologies in the wastewater treatment industry, Mr. LEUNG is also working with Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and a local startup company to develop a second generation of the Foam Removal Robot. In addition, patents for both Foam Removal Robots (the first and second generation) were granted by Intellectual Property Department.
