DSD organised Online Visit at Sha Tin Central Laboratory

26 April 2022

On-site visits to the sewage treatment facilities of the Drainage Services Department (DSD) were suspended due to the COVID-19 epidemic but the DSD had proactively adopted latest technologies and organised a livestreaming online visit at Sha Tin Central Laboratory for the chemistry students of Hong Kong Baptist University on 26 April 2022, enabling the students to have insights into the laboratory services and operation without visiting in person.

To ensure compliance of the sewage treatment service with relevant statutory requirements, the DSD collects and delivers sewage samples for its laboratory tests on a regular basis. Sha Tin Central Laboratory was accredited for testing environmental samples (i.e. samples of water and wastewater) under the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS) in 1999 and became the first laboratory in Hong Kong to be granted HOKLAS accreditation for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) tests using an automatic BOD analyser in 2017. Adopting the automatic analysers, Sha Tin Central Laboratory can conduct speedy, accurate and comprehensive tests on the nutrients, trace metal elements and BOD levels of sewage.

After the visit, the students said the visit had helped them understand how a testing laboratory worked and learn more about sewage treatment. The students even expressed their interest to take part in the work of the DSD.  The Hong Kong Baptist University also appreciated the visit arranged by the DSD.

DSD Chemist, Dr Van MAK Wing-leung, livestreamed the operation of Sha Tin Central Laboratory and introduced the largest BOD analyser in Hong Kong, which can process over 100 samples at the same time

DSD Engineering Laboratory Technician I, Mr LEUNG Chi-kwong presented his laboratory work

DSD Engineering Laboratory Technician II, Mr John FUNG Cheuk-chi presented his laboratory work
