The DSD's project "Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns" had won the international competition "ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards 2021" under the category of "Project of the Year including Renovation (up to €50M)".

International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is a leading international organisation promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge sharing, technical advance and ethical practice. The "ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards" international competition is held by ITA annually to recognise outstanding projects in tunnelling and underground construction industry.  A total number of 56 entries from 22 countries were received for the competition this year.

The relocated Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works are to be housed in underground space. Majority of the excavation works are carried out with drill and blast method where permitted by site conditions. The project team adopts innovative technologies, including the use of integrated online platforms for Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Works Supervision System (DWSS), to improve the site supervision on build quality and safety. The project also make good use of off-site construction method including Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) for enhanced productivity and sustainability.

The ITA award recognises DSD's achievements in tunnelling innovations for enhanced productivity, build quality, sustainability and site safety control. The outstanding performance of the project is led by compliance of the mutual trust and cooperation within the project team, with a common goal of bringing in an innovative and efficient engineering solution for the industry.
