Project Team of Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns interviewed by Ming Pao

28 July 2021

DSD Chief Engineer Mr Tony LEUNG Ka-Chung and Senior Engineer Ms Yvonne LO Chau-ling shared the works progress and new technologies application of the Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatement Works to Caverns project during an interview by Ming Pao on 28 July 2021.

During the interview, Mr LEUNG said the project had completed its first stage of works involving site formation works and construction of main access tunnel to the cavern site at Nui Po Shan and proceeded to its second stage covering the main caverns construction. The caverns will be constructed mainly by blasting, with works expected at its peak in 2023 producing approximately 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes of rock every day.  Mr LEUNG also shared how the project team adopted new technologies, such as “Drilling Jumbo” and “Robotic Monitoring System”, to increase the accuracy of blasting works and improve industrial safety.

Ms LO explained how the adoption of advanced sewage treatment technologies, including“Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor”, helped to minimize the footprint of the new cavern sewage treatment works. Even the footprint of the new facility is only about one half of the existing plant, the design daily sewage treatment capacity will be maintained at about 340,000 cubic meters which is higher than the existing sewage treatment flow of about 260,000 cubic meters.
