SEN’s Blog: Understanding the Expansion of Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works

On 10 May 2021, The Secretary for Environment, Mr WONG Kam-sing, visited the being expanded Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works to know more about the advanced technologies that DSD deploys to overcome different challenges, improve the effectiveness of sewage treatment and effluent quality.

During the interview, DSD Engineer Mr Alvin HO Chark-ming explained the benefits of the two sewage treatment technologies – “Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR)” and “Membrane Bioreactors (MBR)”. He also introduced in particular that the project team has adopted the land-sea two-way Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) method in constructing the new submarine outfall to avoid disturbance to the seabed and minimise the impact to marine ecology.
