Media Briefing – Introducing the HK’s first high-voltage combined heat and power generator

Senior Electrical and Mechanical Engineer of Drainage Services Department (DSD), Mr DAO Kwan-ming, hosted a media briefing on 14 April for the topic of “Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Generator”. In the briefing, he gave an introduction on the HK’s first high-voltage CHP generator located in Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW), and elaborated the way DSD utilized the CHP generators for generation of renewable energy with biogas produced from the sewage treatment process, which in a way also effectively reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, DSD has equiped CHP generators in 3 major secondary sewage treatment works, i.e. Sha Tin STW, Shek Wu Hui STW and Tai Po STW, for generation of renewable energy with biogas produced from the sewage treatment process. In end 2013, DSD commissioned the HK’s first high-voltage CHP generator at STSTW. Comparing with other CHP generators in HK of similar nature, this CHP generator has the highest rate of power generation, capable of energizing over 1,000 nos. of 1.5 horsepower household air-conditioners. Between 2006 and 2013, the overall power generating capacity for CHP generators installed in DSD has progressively increased from 330kW to 3,000 kW.
