Talks by Director of Drainage Services – Innovation and Engineering

7 May 2018

At the invitation of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Civil Division (“HKIE Civil Division”) and the Development Bureau (“DEVB”), Director of Drainage Services, Mr. Edwin TONG Ka-hung delivered talks on “Innovation” at the 39th HKIE Civil Division Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) on 23 April 2018 and the DEVB “Project Capability Building” (“PCB”) Programme on 7 May 2018 respectively.  More than 300 participants joined the two talks.

During the talks, Mr. TONG explained why striving for innovation is very important to a sustainable engineering profession as well as our delivery of infrastructure projects and services.  He shared the latest development of various innovative technologies and applications in the engineering field, such as building information modelling, augmented reality and the applications of sensors, etc.  Mr. TONG also outlined DSD’s application of innovative technologies and mindsets in project delivery, including DSD’s various R&D items in collaboration with academia, application of sensors and big data in real-time monitoring of the territories’ water levels, tide levels and rainfall, etc, to make Hong Kong a more livable smart city.

In concluding the talks, Mr. TONG suggested that apart from having creative minds, platforms to share new ideas and adequate investment in R&D, whether a community or industry can thrive on innovation may ultimately be dependent on two crucial but sometimes debatable factors - “the willingness of the community to change in accepting innovation”; and “the allowance of some room for failure in being innovative”.
