Press briefing on the Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel project and the breakthrough of the Branch Tunnel on 18 January 2011
24 February 2011
The Director of Drainage Services, Mr CHAN Chi Chiu, and Chief Engineer/Project Management, Mr IP Wing Cheung, gave a media briefing today (January 18) on the Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel project and the breakthrough of the Branch Tunnel. The briefing was conducted at the works site of the Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel at Chak On Road South, Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon. Apart from the briefing on the Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel project, a live broadcast was followed showing the branch tunnel breakthrough by the tunnel boring machine.
The Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel project comprises the construction of a Branch tunnel, a Main tunnel, 6 Intakes, a Stilling Basin and an Outfall. Upon completion of the project, surface runoff from the uphill catchment of Lai Chi Kok and Cheung Sha Wan will be intercepted by the drainage tunnel and discharged to the harbour front near Stonecutters Island, thereby reducing the amount of flow entering the stormwater drainage system in the downstream urban area. It will significantly raise the flood protection level of the Lai Chi Kok, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po areas, thereby protecting the public, traffic and economic activities from flooding.
Construction of Lai Chi Kok Drainage Tunnel commenced in November 2008 and is scheduled for completion in end 2012.
