DSD won the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014: Best Innovation (Innovative Technology) Certificate of Merit

15 April 2014

The Drainage Services Department (DSD)’s “Dynamically Adaptive Scum Collection System” won the Certificate of Merit under the category of Best Innovation (Innovative Technology) in the Hong Kong Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Awards 2014. The ICT Awards was steered by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the award presentation was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wanchai on 7 April 2014.

The winning technology “Dynamically adaptive scum collection system” is being used at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works to tackle an everyday problem: sewage level of sedimentation tanks in sewage treatment plants varies throughout the day and fluctuates in a diurnal pattern. Changing sewage level can affect the operation of traditional scum collection system. High sewage level can result in too much water being collected, while low level can result in collection of too little scum. These lead to higher scum treatment cost and poorer effluent quality. “Dynamically adaptive scum collection system” employs ICT innovatively to overcome this problem. Sensors are installed to capture real-time sewage level of the sedimentation tank and a dynamic adaptability algorithm processes the data to optimally control scum collection.
