Innovative Idea for River Revitalisation
In recent years, the DSD has been striving to apply innovative ideas to river revitalisation projects, aiming not only to improve the drainage capabilities of river channels, but also to enhance their aesthetic and ecological values. While studying various river revitalisation schemes, the DSD has been applying different innovative ideas to existing river revitalisation projects. For details, please refer to Chapter 4—Core Responsibilities and Chapter 5—Environmental Management.
In the course of revitalising river channels, the DSD strives to meet public expectations by actively exploring more economical and quicker options to enhance ecological and aesthetic values of existing nullahs in Hong Kong. In 2018, the DSD joined forces with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to conduct research on using instream deflectors to enhance the ecological value of a section of about 330 metres long Hung Shui Kiu Nullah. The result of research was found satisfactory, with more native and wetland-dependent species of conservation concern recorded by the project team during post-enhancement monitoring. The “Quick-Fix” improvement measure has been proved effective in enhancing the eco-environment of nullahs.
