153 flooding reports received

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) received 153 flooding reports by noon today (Monday). Of the incidents, 23 were on Hong Kong Island, 29 in Kowloon and 101 in the New Territories.

DSD has activated its Emergency Control Centre since 1.00 pm yesterday (August 22). Twenty-two drainage crews have been despatched to major flooding locations to investigate the cause of flooding and to take immediate action to clear gullies blocked by rubbish.

The most serious-flooded areas are San Tin, Ng Tung River (Sheung Shui section) in the North District and Sham Shui Po in Kowloon.

The water from Shenzhen Reservoir will be discharged at noon at a rate of 40 cubic metres per second. The discharge will probably affect villages located at Ng Tung River and Ping Yuen River basins. Residents in these areas are advised to take refuge wherever possible. They can call the Home Affairs Department hotline (2835 1473) for addresses of the nearest temporary shelters.

Three flood sirens in Shek Wu San Tsuen, Tin Ping Shan and Tai Po were activated. Village representatives have been alerted of the possibility of flooding in these areas.
