Long-term drainage improvement works in West Kowloon (23/4/1998)

23 April 1998

The Drainage Services Department has started long-term improvement works on the existing stormwater drainage system in West Kowloon to alleviate the flooding problem in the area.

A contract on the works was signed today (Thursday) between the Assistant Director/Sewage Services, Mr Raymond Cheung Tat-kwing, and a representative of the contractor---Wing Fai Construction Company Limited. It covered phase II of the Northwest Kowloon Sewerage Stage III and West Kowloon Stormwater Drainage Improvement Stage 1-Kowloon Tong and Yau Ma Tei Areas.

The works include upgrading about 4.7 km of sewers and 1.4 km of storm drains in Kowloon Tong and Yau Ma Tei areas. When they are completed in 36 months, the hydraulic capacity of the sewerage and stormwater drainage system in the areas will see significant improvement.

The $121.96 million contract was one of the three on sewerage and drainage improvement works for areas in Northwest Kowloon. Two other similar contracts on Sham Shui Po and Tai Kok Tsui are scheduled to begin in July and September this year for completion by early 2003.

Upon completion of all these three contracts at an estimated cost of about $900 million, the capacities of the existing sewerage and stormwater systems in Northwest Kowloon will be improved and the water pollution and flooding problems in the areas will be significantly reduced.
