On 9 October 2016, the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Edwin TONG Ka-hung, and the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Enoch LAM Tin-sing, headed an eight-strong delegation of officials from the Drainage Services Department (DSD) and the Water Supplies Department (WSD) to attend the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition 2016 organized by the International Water Association (IWA) from 9 to 14 October in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.  The event attracted over 5 000 leading water professionals from over one hundred countries to share the best practices and innovative technologies relating to water management.

The DSD delegation also met with officials from the Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) and shared their experience of sustainable water management and wastewater treatment.  Guided by the QUU officials, the delegation visited the Luggage Point  Wastewater Treatment Plant, a large-scale secondary wastewater treatment plant in Brisbane, and its Innovation Centre, as well as the sustainable urban drainage systems in Southbank Parklands and Gold Coast’s Southport Broadwater Parklands.

Through the Congress and visits, the DSD delegation not only shared views on policy implementation and practices of water management with experts from all over the world, but also acquired a deeper insight into the sustainable water management policies and technologies in Australia and other countries.  During the Congress, DSD and WSD announced that Hong Kong would for the first time host the IWA-ASPIRE Conference and Exhibition in 2019.
