Deputy Director of Drainage Services spoke at the first seminar of the “Science in the Public Service” Campaign (Date: 20 July 2013)

Mr. TSUI Wai, Deputy Director of Drainage Services, spoke at the first seminar of “Science in the Public Service” Campaign on 20 July 2013 on “Modern-day Dayu Tames the Water - Flood Prevention Strategy in Hong Kong”.

In the seminar, Mr. TSUI started by introducing the reputable hydraulic engineer in ancient China, Dayu, who successfully tamed floods of Yellow River and became the first emperor of Xia Dynasty. Nowadays, flood prevention is still an enormous challenge for each and every modern city. The Drainage Services Department, the modern Dayu, missions to take up this challenge for Hong Kong by formulating comprehensive flood prevention strategies. Mr. TSUI shared with the audience how the three major flood prevention approaches, i.e. expansion of existing drainage system, stormwater storage and stormwater interception, help protecting the general public against flooding and enabling sustainable development of Hong Kong.
