Since newly set-up private sewage treatment plants may not have sufficient microorganisms to treat the sewage at the outset, activated sludge is required to be collected from Government sewage treatment plants for seeding aiming at speeding up the sewage treatment process. |

Private operating companies collect domestic liquid wastes from septic tanks and aqua privies at various locations of Hong Kong and deliver them to Government sewage treatment plants. |

Sewage and sludge samples are often required for study and research use by Tertiary Institutions. The samples required for these purposes can be collected from Government sewage treatment plants. |
