DSD Open Days 2018

Open Days of the Drainage Services Department (DSD) are being held at Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works today (January 27) and tomorrow (January 28). Under this year’s theme, “Clean up our water, prepare for the rainy day”, the event features various activities such as guided tours and thematic exhibitions which aim at enhancing public’s knowledge of the work undertaken by the DSD in flood prevention, sewage treatment, and combating and mitigating climate change.
Speaking at the opening ceremony today (January 27), the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Edwin Tong Ka-hung, said that in terms of “clean up our water”, the DSD treats one billion cubic metre of sewage annually and as sewage treatment facilities are required to work round-the-clock, a substantial amount of electricity will have to be consumed. In order to reduce carbon emissions and save energy, the DSD attached great importance to research and development, and adopted innovative and cost-effective treatment technologies as well as utilised renewable energy such as biogas and sunlight.
In order to “prepare for the rainy day”, Mr Tong said that apart from carrying out drainage improvement works to enhance flood conveyance capacity in various districts, the DSD has been revitalising rivers with landscape beautification and applied concepts of nature conservation in recent years to build green channels to facilitate water-friendly activities and improve the living environment of the community.
He added that the department continued to organise the Blue-Green Ambassadors Training Programme this year. Over 200 ambassadors were recruited from 10 primary and secondary schools and 20 of them were selected as docents of the Open Days.
The key projects of the DSD featured on the Open Days include the Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Scheme, Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A, Solar Farm at Siu Ho Wan Sewage Treatment Works and Relocation of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns.
Other highlights include stage performances, game booths, a kids fun area and parent-child planting activity. Members of the public are welcome to join this wide range of entertaining and educational programmes. The DSD also made reference to the green event guidebook to formulate waste management strategies for the Open Days in order to enhance the event's environmental performance. Drinking fountains have been placed and food trucks have been set up at the event venue, the DSD called on the visitors to bring their own bottle and table ware.
Admission and activities at the Open Days are free of charge.
