Adhering to our motto 'Do it from the Heart', we actively participate and organise various activities to reinforce our care and responsibility for both colleagues and the community at large.

Safety Forum

To raise safety concerns relating to the HATS Stage 2A project, a forum was held on 10 January 2012. About 130 participants from our Department together with two consultants and contractors of seven contracts for sewage treatment works' (STWs') upgrading works, shared their valuable experience on good site practice and safety management.

Safety Leadership Awards

Our Department was awarded the first runner-up prize in the 'Client-Developer Category' of the Safety Leadership Awards on 9 March 2012. The Department was commended for having demonstrated exemplary safety leadership in practice through inception, design and construction of its projects.

Construction Industry Safety Award Scheme

This Department won 11 awards, including one gold, one bronze and nine merit awards, in the 2011-2012 Award Scheme. Organised by the Labour Department, the Occupational Safety and Health Council, the Development Bureau, the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union and others, this award scheme aims to raise safety and health awareness among contractors, site personnel and industry workers so as to foster a positive safety culture.

Construction Sites Housekeeping Award Scheme

In the scheme's 2011 award presentation ceremony, 22 of the Department's 50 submitted contracts received awards, including four Best Awards and 18 Meritorious Awards. A Grand Award was presented to the best contract among all categories to commend the efforts of the project team in achieving excellent housekeeping on construction sites. All parties on a works site are encouraged to keep up with their excellent work.

Retreat Workshop

The Department organised a retreat workshop in May as well as in November 2011 with the assistance of the Civil Service Training and Development Institute of the Civil Service Bureau. The workshop was designed to discuss challenges and to deliberate over the short, medium and long-term goals of the Department. Through the Institute's programmed exercises and discussions, we developed six strategic goals. Subsequent meetings were held to devise initiatives to realise the set goals.

Team-Building Workshop

A series of team-building workshops were conducted to boost team spirit and to improve team building skills of our staff members. These activity-based workshops built trust and support among our colleagues and helped them acquire a positive mindset, all of which led to improved efficiency in the workplace.

Visit by Secretary for Civil Service

Secretary Denise Yue paid a visit to the Shatin STW and met our colleagues on 6 May 2011. Ms Yue was briefed on site on the Department's scope of work. She also had a gathering with the Department's three Consultative Committees' representatives during which she answered questions on civil service structure and shared colleagues' personal feelings about the workplace.

Hong Kong Marathon 2012

We participated in the Hong Kong Marathon 2012 together with our project partners, that is, our consultants and construction companies. More than 650 participants took part and there was a visible display of team spirit.

Familiarisation Visit

The Department organised a visit for our Senior Treasury Accountant, Executive Officers, Official Language Officers and Accounting Officers to help them familiarise with and better understand the Department's scope of work. They visited the Shatin STW, Yuen Long Bypass Floodway, San Tin Flood Prevention Information Centre and the Stanley STW. The ex-Director of General Grades, Mr Patrick Chan, also joined the visit.

Dragon Boat Race

We won the champion together with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department in the China Light and Power Dragon Boat Friendship Cup Tournament, thanks to colleagues' arduous practising and active prior participation in other dragon boat races.

Departmental Consultative Committees

The Department's three consultative committees allow for open dialogues between management and staff of all grades, assuring better understanding and co-operation.

Prevention of Influenza

As in the previous years, we organised vaccination for colleagues as a preventive measure. Staff members paid for their vaccination provided by a voluntary medical organisation. Guidelines on the prevention of pandemic influenza, including avian flu and H1N1A, were also promulgated to arouse awareness.

Sowers Action Challenging 12 Hours

Our two teams participated in 'Sowers Action Challenging 12 hours' marathon, organised by the Sowers Action to raise fund for the Foundation Education Development Programme in China.

Ngong Ping Charity Walk 2012

We formed a team to support the 'Ngong Ping Charity Walk 2012', organised by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association to promote the awareness of environmental heritage conservation.

Friends of the Earth's Tree Planting Challenge

Our colleagues took part in this hiking-cum-tree planting competition that aimed to raise awareness of conservation.

Community Chest's Fund-raising

We continued to support the Chest's Skip Lunch Day, Green Day, Love Teeth Day and Community Assistance Raised by Employees Scheme to raise funds for the Chest's member agencies.

Lifeline Express Charity Run and Walk

Three colleagues participated in this charity run to raise money for the Express, which is a purpose-built hospital train that provides free cataract operations in rural China.

Green Power Hiking

Our participation in this charity hiking, organised by the Green Power, showed our support to environmental education.

Construction Industry Charity Concert

We gave full support to this event held by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, to raise money for their fund that gives immediate financial assistance to families who lost their member in construction-related accidents.

Various Fund-raising Events

We raised funds also for other charitable causes, including World Vision's 'Skip-A-Meal'; 'Oxfam Rice' Sale; Haven of Hope Christian Service's 'Qile' Charity Cake Sale; Salvation Army's 'Lai See Day'; Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation's charity walk, and 'Oxfam Trail Walker'.

Classes for the Elderly

Our Volunteer Team continued holding interest classes for the elderly in Lai Yiu Bradbury Care Home in 2011, showing how to make greeting cards, mid-autumn festival lanterns and three-dimensional Christmas trees.

'Hong Kong Citizen, Hong Kong Heart' Campaign

For this campaign, our staff members made accessories to be given out during our subsequent visits to the needy elders.

Blood Donation

We organised a 'Blood Donation Day' with the Hong Kong Red Cross to collect blood for those in need.
